The test results confirm the market readiness of the high-speed manufacturing facility. The wires will be on the market as early as spring 2016.

 

MgB2 wires have been known to be the cheapest superconducting wires along with NbTi wires in the market but without the requirement of using liquid helium bath for cooling. This difference makes MgB2 wires highly desirable because liquid helium is very expensive and environmentally troublesome.

 

Until today, the mass production of MgB2 wires posed serious challenges, which was the major handicap for its use in the market. The significance of the Epoch Wires' proprietary and patent pending technology is that the high volume demand of these wires in MRI, Wind Turbines, and Power transmission markets can now be met. For example, a typical MRI machine requires 10-20 km long wires, and the entire MRI market may require as long as 1 million km long wire per year for making new machines.
